When Atlus announced that they would be localizing Aquaplus’ Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & the Monster Seal for the PlayStation Vita, they received a lot of negative criticism. If the game wasn’t be knocked by journalists and bloggers for its imagery, it was being criticized by western otakus for having a few censored images. But if that is all people are focused on, then what about the actual gameplay?

I got my hands on Dungeon Travelers 2 at E3 2015 and found enjoyment in the 40 minutes that I got to spend with the game. I first spent some time checking out the hub menu screen, where you can check your party and missions along with managing equipment and various character customization where you are able to change classes and add sub-classes once your character gets to a certain level. The hand drawn character avatars are extremely well done and I was also surprised with a very revealing CG image while playing through the demo. And from the hub menu, you exit to world map where you will move a cursor to the dungeon of your choice.

Like a typical dungeon crawler, it’s in the first person as you make your way down hall. And here is where the game truly gets interesting. The battle system is very straight forward you have attack, skills, items, defend, run so those use to JRPGs will feel right at home in this area. But when I tried to attack, I learned that my attacks were causing little to no damage to this random enemy, which is mostly played by another girl. The game forces you to use the classes of the monster girls to defeat certain enemies, so it’s up to the player to bring in the right party.

Dungeon Travelers 2 is very difficult and I died a few times during the demo because I went in thinking it was a walk in the park. So if you’re interested in the game for the CG, then you’re going to have to work hard for it because this game is 50 hours long with a New Game Plus that can last 20 hours.

Oh, look at that, we got through a whole impressions piece for this game without talking about the fan service. To make a long story short, it’s there, trust me.

Dungeon Travelers 2 provides examples of:

• A-Cup Angst: Subverted. When Alicia first meets up with Fried, she gets jealous of his increased height.
• All Witches Have Cats: The Sorceress monster type is depicted with a cat by her side, an absolutely huge one at that. It doesn't play a role in her attacks, though.
• Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Averted. Sexual thoughts almost never seem to be on Fried's mind, but many monsters accuse him of being a rapist when his group of fighters defeat them.
  • A few monsters even ask him this exact question, which, of course, disgusts him.
• Attention Deficit.. Ooh, Shiny!: Alicia is way too easily distracted, especially by food.

• Big Eater: Alicia is a big sweets eater, but not nearly as much as Conette.
• Berserk Button: NEVER question Fried's role as a Libra.
  • Also applies to when his coworkers are slacking off.
• Born Unlucky: Fried, by his own admission. Alicia and Melvy agree. It can be seen as an explanation why it's so easy to walk into traps in dungeons.
• Cat Girl: Werecats are low-level enemies that are depicted as young girls with cat ears, a large cat bell on their chest, a tail and.. slippers in the form of cats.
• Caught with Your Pants Down: Subverted. Melvy wears a skirt, but the very first time you see her after she collapses from rubble, a still-image shows her panty-clad butt openly exposed.
  • Subverted even further by the fact nobody seems to care or even react, not even her.
• Charged Attack: How magical spells function in this game. Instead of casting them instantly, the caster begins chanting the spell. This takes a few turns and can be interrupted by damage, especially in the form of critical hits. The time it takes for the chant to complete is dependant on the power and rank of the spell.

• Clueless Chick Magnet: Fried, through and through. Melvy is in love with him and the other girls drop hints as well. While Fried appreciates their friendship, he's more interested in researching monsters.
• The Comically Serious: A source of humor in the game is Fried, and by extension the narration, entirely ignoring the fanservice the girls throw at him. When Conette invites him to her room for 'serious discussion'^note and greets him almost completely naked, he reacts flustered, but only because her chubby stomach and flabby arms are on full display and because such an outfit is hardly appropriate for a serious discussion.
• Cordon Bleugh Chef: Irena makes some sort of healthy tea for Fried, who almost chokes on it. She actually followed the recipe and made sure it tasted good.. only to add a whole bunch of other, clashing ingredients to it afterwards, completely ruining the taste.
• Covert Pervert: Lilian. When Alicia asked Lilian to show her drawings, Lilian was suspiciously flustered while rejecting her.
  • Implied even further when Monica refers to Grishna as Oneesama, Lilian accuses her of having a yuri thing for Grishna.
• Doom Magnet: Lilian considers herself this. Fried remains sceptical and usually considers his bad luck at fault when the party runs into traps and such.
• Elegant Gothic Lolita: Lilian dresses in this fashion in her default class as Spieler. Her dress gets even frillier in her Doll Master and Soul Summoner classes.
• Enemy Scan: The Searching Eye joint attack reveals everything about every monster on the field, including remaining HP. This isn't normally visible, even when you already have created the sealbook(s) of the enemy monster type(s).
• Fanservice: InSPADES.
• Flower in Her Hair: The Dryad monster type, as befitting a nature spirit.
• Frankenstein's Monster: Named 'Creature', this monster takes the form of a young woman wearing a double-breasted winter coat. The bolts are attached to her hat.
• Friendless Background: Averted with Fried, although he admits this is only because of Alicia and Melvy's efforts. He doesn't seem to mind, though.
• Genius Ditz: Alicia graduated with near-perfect scores in her swordsmanship and the worst scores in everything else.
• Genki Girl: Alicia never drops her cheerful attitude.
• Glacier Waif: Alicia is short and small, yet her fighter class gives her more hit points, strength and defense than the other characters at the start of the game, such as Melvy and Lilian. Even more pronounced when she unlocks her advanced classes, which potentially have her walking around in heavy armor, wielding weapons bigger than herself.
• Glass Cannon: Magic Users, Sorceresses and Witches can easily obliterate entire rows of monsters, but have the lowest amount of HP in the game and can only equip relatively weak armor.
• Height Angst: When Alicia first meets up with Fried, she gets jealous of his increased height.
• Idiot Hair: Monica, who quickly proves why when she does a pretty bad job spying on the party, going so far as to stumble over some debris before Fried could even attempt to catch her red-handed.
• I Just Want to Have Friends: Despite her insistence that she's cursed and to leave her alone, it's implied Lilian actually feels this way. She's rather quick to join the party when Fried invites her, at least.
• Lazy Bum: Conette the maid, who rather spends her time eating sweats than actually working. As an enemy, she also has the ability to induce this on the party (and some random maid that was trying to catch her). Of course, she loses it after she joins.
• Magic Knight: The Magical Princess class, which combines magical attacks, melee (sword) attacks and defensive spells. They're quite powerful, but burn through their TP quickly, which makes them somewhat difficult to play at lower levels.
• Massive Numbered Siblings: Monica has about fifteen of them. She's the oldest.
• Meganekko: Fried and Monica. Melvy puts on a pair of glasses, too, if she becomes a witch.
• Ninja Maid: Maids in this universe are either actual maids or spies. On missions, they tend to work in units of five, which are usually well-balanced. Some maids focus on melee, others on healing and so on.
• Nun Too Holy: The Priestess monster type is depicted as a nun wielding a giant, blood-stained hammer, an evil grin and a healthy amount of cleavage. Averted with the party members who can become priestesses, as they dress more conservatively, especially compared to some of their more Stripperific classes.
• Overprotective Dad: Melvy's father goes so far as using his position as head of the Royal Order to sent Monica to spy on Fried and anyone else who comes close to his daughter. Especially Fried, though.
• Palette Swap: Some monsters, such as the regular blue Slapyon and its mutant variation, the green Bubble Slapyon.
• Perpetual Poverty: Monica. Comes with trying to pay off her parents' 18 million gold debt.
• Prestige Class: There are five base classes and each can upgrade twice, the first time at level 15 and the second time at level 30.
• Quirky Bard: The Spieler class and its advanced stages, Trickster and Joker, function a lot like this. Their playstyle can be summed up as high risk, high reward. Take for example the description of the Trickster class:
  Rather than consistency, members of this class relish the instability that comes with not knowing what will happen. In times of great danger, they may be able to turn the tables in your party's favor.. Maybe.
• Random Effect Spell: The Roulette Circus, Magic Box and Showtime techniques, learned by the Spieler class line, function like this.
• Sacrificial Revival Spell: A variation: Maids can learn a skill that sacrifices all of their own TP and distribute it among the characters of your chosing. The Maid stays alive, however, and since her skills cost no TP, she can still function to her full ability
• Skeletons in the Coat Closet: The Skeleton monster type looks like a teenage girl wearing punk-like apparel (including a shirt with a skull on it) and wielding a large bone as a melee staff.
• Skill Point Reset: In the form of a level reset, which sets the character back to level 1, 15, 30, 50 or 90; each rank getting unlocked once the character reaches it. This sets a character back to the chosen level, changes them back to their base class and refunds all the skillpoints they would have at said level (3 at level 1, 18 at level 15 and so on). If a character is set back to level 1 from level 61 or above, they will also gain permanent stat boosts. This allows for the player to experiment with different classes and builds.
• Stripperific: A common trait among both the party members and the monsters.
• Tech Points: Each level up awards one and they're needed to unlock skills and to improve them. Somewhat confusingly, the game uses the term 'Tech Points' as stand-in for Mana, which fuels actual skill use in and outside of battle.
• Tickle Torture: On Monica after she has been beaten, in an effort to get her to confess why she was tailing the party.
• Tsundere: A very rare male example. Fried gets very peeved when Alisia sneaks into his bed and lashes at Conette for slacking off.
• The Unintelligible: The creature running the Quest Desk (resembling a ram of sorts) speaks in a muffled voice, which is depicted as a series of ellipses in the dialogue box. Fried is able to understand them perfectly, however, and their actual lines are shown underneath the ellipses inside parentheses.
• Unrequited Love: Melvy is very much in love with Fried and even confesses to him during Chapter 3, but Fried is much more concerned with his job as a Libra.
• What the Hell, Hero?: One mutant monster accuses humans of being petty thieves, only intent on stealing their money and tearing of their clothes so the girls in the party can wear them. To top it off, they kidnap monsters and hold them captive in books. It makes Fried feel awkward because he can't really deny those claims.
• Workaholic: Fried can often be seen filing reports or doing research after work hours. His chief, Irena, has to outright order him to go to sleep.
