Was it a latte with the image of a cat made out of foam?
A tiny table and chair set in your dining room where your cat could eat?

Today, everyone’s heard of a cat cafe. New York is, of course, the epicenter of cat culture in the U.S. (don’t @ us!) so it makes sense that the city would have a notable selection of cat-friendly cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops to choose from. If you’ve been looking for the best spot to drink espresso and pet a cat, we’ve got the list for you.

These are New York City’s best cat cafes for 2018.

Koneko might be the city’s most famous cat cafe. It’s in the Japanese cat cafe tradition which means you can actually sit down and enjoy your drink with a cat directly in your lap. (Heaven? No, it’s just the Lower East Side.) Like all New York cat cafes, Koneko is not BYOC. Twenty felines permanently reside at the property so there’s always a new feline for you to mix and mingle with when you visit. And don’t forget…they’re all adoptable!

Koneko serves traditional Japanese fare – sake, anyone? – and has three distinct rooms, one outside on the “catio,” where you can hang with cats. It’s also designed with selfies in mind so don’t forget to charge your phone before you go. Because of its popularity, you’ll want to reserve your space before you go, which you can do online.

Also located on the Lower East Side is Meow Parlour, founded by the former pastry chef at Macaron Parlour. It offers an incredibly rotating selection of pastries and house-made treats, but the real reason most people come is – wait for it – the cats. Unless you come for the cat-shaped macarons in which case, good on you.

A clowder of adoptable kitties roam freely in the “cat” section of the restaurant (the “food” section is separated per NYC health code), and Meow Parlour even offers regular kids’ hours when children can come and mingle with the cats, too. This was New York’s first and original cat cafe so it’s very popular. We recommend reservations.

The aptly-named Brooklyn Cat Cafe the other Boroughs’ first and only cat cafe. Location in trendy Brooklyn Heights, the cafe’s many, many on-site felines are all adoptable and – bonus! – viewable 24-hours a day via live webcam. It’s currently the only not-for-profit cat cafe in all of New York City.

They don’t actually make food at the Brooklyn Cat Cafe but they offer a variety of pre-packaged snacks, drinks, and treats. You’re even welcome to bring in your own coffee or food if you’d like. And if you’re not that into cats, the cafe also has rats and turtles you can chill near. But if you don’t like cats, maybe a cat cafe isn’t really your thing?
